What Is Spiritual Fitness Training?

by DIANE MCGEE on May 09, 2025

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”— 1 Timothy 4:8

We know what it looks like to exercise our bodies—weights, cardio, protein shakes, and goals. But how do we exercise our spirit?

Spiritual Fitness Training is just that. It’s a conscious, intentional strengthening of the inner life. Not through striving, but through alignment. It’s about building soul stamina and heart muscle, so when life gets heavy, your spirit doesn’t collapse. You may wobble. But you won’t fall.

This Isn’t Religion. It’s Restoration.

It’s not about rituals or checklists. It’s about inner well-being, soundness of mind, fitness of the soul. Spiritual Fitness Training is the steady, intentional practice of exercising core values and developing character.

It’s not about striving—it’s about strengthening. And like physical exercise, it takes consistency, grace, and rest. It’s less about performance and more about presence. Less hustle. More holy hush.

Why It Matters More Than You Might Think

Our culture celebrates hustle. But hustle doesn’t heal. And while bodily training “is of some value,” as Paul told Timothy, it’s not where lasting peace comes from.

Spiritual fitness holds promise for all things.
It helps you…
   •   Show up with grace when you’d rather withdraw
   •   Choose self-control when impulses flare
   •   Anchor in hope when storms hit
   •   Discern truth when the noise gets loud
   •   Endure, with a light yoke and lifted chin

What Does Spiritual Training Look Like?

Here are a few of my go-to “exercises”—each one a rep for the soul:

   •   Scripture Meditation: Not just reading, but receiving. Pick a verse and let it read you.

   •   Prayer: Conversation with God, not performance. Bring your whole self—messy and beautiful. Speak from your heart.

   •   Gratitude Practice: Record three things daily. Watch how it shifts your outlook.

   •   Solitude: Pull away to realign. Jesus did it often.

   •   Service: Sometimes the most strengthening thing you can do is pour out love.

You’ll Know It’s Working When…

   •   You pause before reacting.
   •   You forgive when it’s not deserved.
   •   You begin to crave peace more than being right.
   •   You hear the Spirit’s whisper louder than your fear.

These are the muscles that matter most.

No Gym Membership Required

Start small. Five minutes of quiet with your Creator. A verse. A breath. A whispered thank you.

Write it down. Show up again tomorrow.
